Basic Bicycle Structure

The elementary design of the bicycle consists of the following parts:

Frame: The base structure of the bicycle on to which all the other parts are fitted. It is generally made of steel and is generally diamond in shape (One main and 2 paired rear triangles).

Drivetrain: Comprises of the crank sets front and back which are rotated with the help of pedals. When the rider uses the foot, the crankset converts the reciprocal motion into rotational motion which pushes the chain and in turn rotates the rear wheel.

Steering and seating: The handlebar helps the rider to steer the cycle. The handlebar also supports the weight of the rider. The brakes and bells are other attachments that are found on the handlebars. The seat is where the rider sits.

Brakes: Each cycle brake has got three units namely: brake lever, signal transmitter and the brake itself. The brake when applied presses either side of the wheel to apply a friction. This friction converts the kinetic energy generated by the moving wheel into thermal energy thus reducing speed.

Wheels: The wheel is made of a metal hub, wire tension spokes, metal rim, and rubber tire. The hub is the center part of the wheel. The spokes connect the rim to the hub. The metal rim is made of an aluminum alloy and accommodates the rubber tire. The rim also has a flat surface for the rim brakes. The tires provide the suspension and generate the force for propulsion and stopping. Wheels no doubt are the integral part of a cycle.
